Let’s get the obvious out of the way: we built Grooper. With our own profits, no investors, right here in Oklahoma City. So read this comparison the way you’d read any vendor’s comparison, with one eyebrow up.
But here’s our promise. ABBYY and Tungsten are Gartner Leaders for a reason, and we’ll tell you exactly where they’re strong. We’ll also tell you where Grooper has a steeper learning curve, because our own customers say so out loud.
A company honest about its choices is a company you can believe about its strengths. What we won’t do is pretend the three platforms are interchangeable.
They’re not, and picking the wrong one for your documents is an expensive mistake.
Quick answer:
ABBYY, Tungsten Automation (formerly Kofax), and Grooper are all enterprise intelligent document processing (IDP) platforms, but they fit different buyers. ABBYY leads on breadth, with the largest library of pre-trained document skills. Tungsten leads on end-to-end workflow orchestration at global-bank scale.
Grooper leads on hard documents (degraded scans, handwriting, wildly variable layouts) and on licensing economics at volume, since it’s priced by page rather than by CPU or server. The right choice depends on your document complexity, your volumes, and how much you trust demo-day accuracy claims.

ABBYY vs. Tungsten Automation (Kofax): how do they compare?
ABBYY and Tungsten Automation are the two most established names in enterprise document processing, and Gartner named both Leaders in its first-ever IDP Magic Quadrant in September 2025.
ABBYY’s flagship platform, Vantage, is best known for a large library of pre-trained “document skills.” If your organization processes a huge variety of common document types across many countries and languages, that head start matters. You spend less time building extraction models for standard documents because ABBYY already built them.
Tungsten Automation is the company formerly known as Kofax, which rebranded in 2024 after roughly four decades in the capture market. Tungsten’s strength is end-to-end workflow orchestration: capture plus process automation plus e-signature plus print management in one vendor relationship.
Global banks and large BPOs have run on Kofax technology for decades, and that operational maturity is real. Tungsten also owns Ephesoft, the capture platform Kofax acquired in 2022, which is relevant to some of the customer stories below.
So who wins between the two? Honestly, it depends on whether your problem is breadth (ABBYY) or orchestration (Tungsten). But there’s a third question buyers often skip, and it’s the one that determines whether either platform will work for you at all:
How ugly are your documents?
Where does Grooper fit in this comparison?
Grooper was built by BIS, an Oklahoma City company that turns forty this year. We spent our first three decades in data capture as practitioners: running the industry’s hardest document projects with the industry’s tools, and outgrowing them. In 2015 we did something companies our size aren’t supposed to do.
We built our own platform, funded by our own profits, every line of code in-house. We built it specifically for the documents that made everyone else’s tools struggle. Degraded scans. Handwriting. Faxes. Nested tables. Layouts that change constantly.
Three design choices define the difference:
Image processing before recognition. Grooper includes more than 70 image processing commands that can be applied, and reapplied, at any stage of the pipeline. Degraded documents get cleaned up before OCR ever runs, which is why accuracy holds up on the documents that tank generic capture tools.
Sample-free classification. Traditional capture systems learn document types from libraries of training samples, often 20 or more per type. Grooper uses positive extractors that look for keywords and characteristics instead. One customer with more than 1,500 distinct document types classified 98% of all bank statements without providing a single training sample of each.
Page-volume licensing. Grooper is licensed by pages processed, never by CPU cores, servers, or seats. You can scale processing across unlimited hardware at no extra license cost. One customer spins up dozens of idle desktops as a thread pool during peak batches. More on why this matters below.
And a philosophy underneath all three: simple first. When a deterministic rule beats an AI model, Grooper doesn’t use a model.
That makes automation faster and cheaper, because you don’t need AI for the parts that don’t need it. Where we do use AI, extracted data gets validated against your systems of record, so what comes out carries proof, not just probability.
The proof points run from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (39 million pages of aged microfiche migrated in nine months) to Funeral Directors Life, which hit 80% handwriting recognition accuracy on day one and has since expanded Grooper into a company-wide automation program.
Side-by-side: ABBYY vs. Tungsten vs. Grooper
| ABBYY (Vantage) | Tungsten Automation (Kofax) | Grooper (by BIS) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best known for | Large library of pre-trained document skills; breadth across languages and document types | End-to-end workflow orchestration; 40-year enterprise capture history | Hard, messy, and variable documents; extraction accuracy on degraded inputs |
| Classification approach | Pre-trained skills plus custom training | Template and ML-based training | Positive extractors; few or zero samples needed |
| Licensing | Subscription tiers (verify current model with ABBYY) | Varies by product line (verify with Tungsten) | Page volume only; unlimited hardware scaling |
| Deployment | Cloud and on-prem | Cloud and on-prem | On-prem, cloud, or hybrid; supports locally hosted LLMs |
| Analyst standing | Gartner MQ Leader (2025) | Gartner MQ Leader (2025) | Specialist; strongest on complex-document use cases |
| Typical buyer | Global enterprise with broad document variety | Banks, insurers, BPOs standardizing workflow end to end | Teams with difficult documents; healthcare, government, energy, and finance are common examples |
One honesty note on that table: we’ve marked competitor licensing as “verify with vendor” because these models change, and we’d rather you get current numbers from them than stale ones from us. The customer experiences below reflect what buyers encountered at the time they switched.

What do customers say after switching to Grooper?
This is where we can offer something most comparison pages can’t: documented, named-where-possible stories from organizations that ran the alternatives first.
The medical device company that left Ephesoft. A leading maker of lymphedema therapy devices first deployed Ephesoft (now part of Tungsten) for its Veterans Affairs department. It never got further than that.
In their Enterprise Software Architect’s words: “We were getting garbage recognition on a lot of stuff with Ephesoft, so we could never trust it. We were constantly having someone go back and double check it.”
Ephesoft also failed to identify roughly 10% of that department’s documents. They replaced it with Grooper, and the same architect reported “really good OCR reads, both on our unstructured data and also on handwritten forms… a huge step up from Ephesoft.”
The mortgage software company that ran everything. Before Grooper, this company used Ephesoft, PSIGEN, Captiva, and IBM capture tools.
Their pain points, per their President and COO: the sample trap (finding 20 training samples for each of 1,500 document types is nearly impossible), zonal OCR, image round-tripping (converting clean electronic files to TIFFs just to OCR them), and per-CPU-core licensing that made scaling expensive.
After switching in 2019, one of their healthcare customers cut AP staffing from 75 clerks to 14, saved $1.5 million a year, and now runs 62% of direct invoices with zero human touches. Their verdict on price comparisons: “If a competing product is cheaper but it can’t do the job, it doesn’t really matter.”
Funeral Directors Life, which almost signed elsewhere. FDL’s VP of Development evaluated four IDP platforms and was close to signing with one of them when he encountered Grooper at a conference. The handwriting recognition capability and the straightforward Hyland OnBase integration changed his shortlist.
His summary: “There were a million different reasons why we picked Grooper.” That was the start. FDL has since expanded Grooper across the enterprise into a program supporting the company’s push to automate 60,000 hours of work in 2026, spanning claims reconciliation (20 minutes down to 6.7 per claim), price-list extraction that was impossible to automate before Grooper’s AI tools, mobile document capture that placed third for an NFDA Innovation Award, and survey processing that cut a minimum of $250,000 a year in vendor fees.
Every workflow runs with a live dashboard tracking actual, not projected, savings.
Fair is fair, so here’s the trade-off our customers name most often: Grooper’s learning curve is steeper than simpler tools.
The mortgage company President said it directly: “It is more involved because there’s just so much more functionality within the product. Whereas the other products have a very simple user interface, but then you’re very limited on what you can actually do.”
If you want maximum capability, plan for real training. Grooper University exists for exactly that reason.
The 2025 release also shrinks that curve considerably: Grooper’s AI Productivity Helpers now write the regular expressions, SQL queries, and even entire data model structures for you from plain-English descriptions, so the deep functionality no longer requires deep syntax.
How does licensing compare between these platforms?
Licensing is where IDP comparisons get real, because the sticker price and the three-year cost are different animals.
The models you’ll encounter in this market: per-page or per-document pricing (cheap in pilots, expensive at 10 million pages a year), subscription tiers by volume band, per-CPU or per-server licensing (you pay more to add processing power), and capacity models.
Grooper’s position is simple: you’re licensed by page volume, and hardware is unlimited. Need to crush a backfile project or a month-end peak? Add machines. The license doesn’t care.
That’s how one customer processed a bulk acquisition of 6,000+ loan files in a 72-to-96-hour window, work they estimated at 100 human days.
For ABBYY and Tungsten, get current licensing terms directly from them and model your true volumes, including growth and peaks. Then, whichever vendors you’re comparing, calculate the cost line most buyers skip: exception-handling labor.
At one million pages a month, the difference between 95% and 98% straight-through processing is tens of thousands of human touches. The platform that handles your hardest documents best is usually the cheapest one in year three, regardless of sticker price.
Does vendor stability matter when choosing an IDP platform?
More than most comparison pages admit. The capture market has spent two decades consolidating:
- Platforms get acquired
- Roadmaps change
- Licensing changes with new owners
- Customers foot the migration bill
We watched it happen from the inside. Before we built Grooper, BIS spent decades running and reselling the industry’s capture tools. Most of those platforms are gone or absorbed.
Captiva is now OpenText Intelligent Capture. Ephesoft was acquired by Kofax in 2022. Kofax itself became Tungsten Automation in 2024.
None of that makes the current products bad, but every ownership change is a moment where your platform’s future gets decided by someone who didn’t sign your contract.
Here’s a question worth asking every vendor on your shortlist: who will own you in five years?
Our answer hasn’t changed in four decades. BIS has been under the same ownership since 1986, self-funded, no investors, no debt.
Nobody outside the building holds a lever over Grooper’s direction. When you plan a ten-year document automation program, that stability is a feature you can’t bolt on later.
Which platform should you choose?
Our honest routing, the same framework we use in our full guide to the top IDP vendors:
- Choose ABBYY if your challenge is breadth: many countries, many languages, mostly standard document types where pre-trained skills give you a running start.
- Choose Tungsten Automation if you’re standardizing end-to-end workflow orchestration across a global bank or BPO and want one vendor for capture through process automation.
- Choose Grooper if your documents are the hard part: degraded scans, handwriting, faxes, complex tables, layouts that never stop changing. Also if you need on-premises deployment (including locally hosted LLMs, so generative AI never leaves your building), or if per-page licensing with unlimited hardware fits your volume economics. Healthcare, government, energy, and finance are where we’re most often found, but those are examples, not boundaries.
And a note on how we operate: we’re focused, on purpose. We don’t chase every deal, and if your use case is one another platform genuinely serves better, we’ll tell you.
A vendor that tells you what it won’t do is a vendor you can believe about what it will.
And whichever way you lean, run the same test: a proof of concept on your documents, including the worst ones, measured at the field level. Demo documents are chosen by vendors. Your documents are chosen by reality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kofax the same as Tungsten Automation?
Yes. Kofax rebranded as Tungsten Automation in 2024. The company also owns Ephesoft, the capture platform Kofax acquired in 2022.
Is Grooper an ABBYY alternative?
Yes. Grooper is an enterprise IDP platform and a direct ABBYY alternative, strongest where documents are degraded, handwritten, or highly variable, and where on-premises deployment or page-volume licensing matters.
What is the best alternative to Kofax or Ephesoft?
It depends on why you’re leaving. Organizations that switched from Ephesoft to Grooper cited recognition accuracy, sample-heavy training, and licensing costs as their reasons. ABBYY and Hyperscience are also credible alternatives depending on your document mix.
Which is more accurate: ABBYY, Tungsten, or Grooper?
On clean documents, all three perform well; leading platforms reach roughly 95 to 99% field accuracy on common document types. On degraded or handwritten documents, results diverge sharply, which is why you should test on your own worst documents rather than rely on any vendor’s claims. Including ours.
Does Grooper require training samples for every document type?
No. Grooper’s positive extractors classify documents by keywords and characteristics. One customer classified 98% of bank statements across 1,500+ document types without a single training sample of each.
