In last week’s webinar, our guest speaker, Kyle Swearingen of Funeral Director’s Life (FDL), gave us some proof of AI’s massive increase in accuracy through Grooper.
Kyle and his team have received a lot of press from us because they’ve been trailblazers with Grooper’s use of AI.
When FDL turned on “AI Extract” in Grooper 2024, they got an immediate 10% increase in extraction accuracy from their handwritten contracts.
Very impressive.

Using OpenAI with Grooper
FDL uses OpenAI for their Grooper AI integrations. This has allowed them to test the fine-tuning of models as well.
This was news to me.
Grooper enables you to build fine-tuning data for OpenAI models right from a fully indexed Grooper batch. There’s no code to write, there’s nothing but point-click and select to create a fine-tuned OpenAI model.
We’ve had great success in our own testing with this methodology, but it’s always great to get external confirmation from actual users.
Using AI for Better Accuracy and Saving Money
Kyle and his team built a fine-tuned model from a single batch of ten fully indexed contracts for one state (contracts vary by state). By switching from a generic OpenAI model (GPT-4o) to a fine-tuned one (based on GPT-4o mini), they:
- Saw an immediate 15% increase in accuracy (on top of the 10% they already got from using AI Extract)
- Were also able to switch to a cheaper OpenAI model
Better accuracy and 10% of the price. Kyle admits in the video that their costs for OpenAI integration are minimal, “Tens of dollars,” he says.
An Example of AI’s Data Security
After the webinar, Kyle and I were talking about all things AI, and he updated me on something else. Something that everyone is concerned about when using AI models.
He recently tried to fine-tune a batch and it kept failing. Not sure why, he started to investigate to see if he’d found an “undocumented feature,” as we like to call bugs in software.
Turns out that wasn’t the case.
The Grooper batch he used to build the fine-tuning data from had some personal data in it, PII. OpenAI rejected the batch because of this – automatically.
